How to brew coffee with a French Press coffee maker?
Making coffee with a French Press is incredibly easy! The entire process takes 4-5 minutes, doesn't require a filter, and it extracts an intense taste from the coffee.
When making coffee with a French Press, our recommendation is to go for medium or dark roast coffee. Single-origin coffee is preferable, but there's nothing wrong with a good blend as well.
What's required?
- French Press
- Coffee grinder
- Electric water kettle
- Timer
- Coffee mug
Step 1: Prepare the water
Turn on the water kettle and let the water boil. The ideal temperature is around 195°F, so you can either let the water sit for some time after it boils or use a water thermometer to get the exact temperature.
Step 2: Grind the coffee
Ideally, you will have an electric coffee grinder with an electronic grind selector, but even a manual grinder will do as long as you can set the granularity. Select the setting for coarsely ground coffee. Alternatively, coffee as coarse as breadcrumbs will suffice. You will need 60g (about 9 tablespoons) of coffee per 33oz of water. If you prefer a stronger taste, you can add a few more tablespoons of coffee or decrease the amount of water.
Step 3: Add water
Set the timer to 4 minutes. Add the coffee to the French Press, start the timer, and pour approximately half of the water. After 30 seconds, gently stir the coffee with a spoon (preferably a wooden spoon to avoid scratches) and add more water if desired. Put the lid on and allow it to brew.
Step 4: Press it down, sip and enjoy
After 4 minutes, you are ready to press. Push the press all the way down. Pour into your mug, sip, serve, and enjoy! Don't let the coffee sit too long in the Press so it doesn't become over extracted and bitter.
And that's it! It's that simple. Most importantly, you don't need fancy equipment to enjoy good coffee. The French Press is the perfect coffee tool both at home and on the go because it's easy to pack and simple to use.
